About Us
Henry McCanThe Institute for Classical Asian Medicine, LLC was founded by Henry McCann, DAOM, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.  Dr. McCann is a licensed acupuncturist and nationally certified diplomate in Oriental medicine (NCCAOM) who is currently in private practice in Madison, NJ.  He formerly was the president of the New Jersey Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.  In 2005 the New Jersey Governor appointed Dr. McCann to sit on the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners Acupuncture Examining Board, and he currently serves as President of that Board.

Dr. McCann finished his BA and BM at Oberlin College following which he studied at the University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa, Japan as a Fulbright fellow.  He then studied at the nation’s oldest college of Oriental Medicine, the New England School of Acupuncture.  In an effort to further his own clinical training he completed his doctoral degree at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine; as part of that degree he interned in the gynecology department of the Chengdu University of Chinese Medicine (Sichuan, China).  Dr. McCann is a professional member of the National Qigong Association (NQA), the Society for Acupuncture Research (SAR), and a professional member of the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.  As a writer, he has been published several times in the international Journal of Chinese Medicine.

In addition to his clinical practice Dr. McCann is committed to bringing Oriental medicine to a higher level by educating professionals in advanced concepts in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.  He is an experienced teacher who currently is on the faculty of the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in Manhattan, and prior to that was a core faculty member at the Eastern School of Acupuncture in Montclair, NJ. He also teaches in Europe and is the Head Lecturer for the Cork Institute for Postgraduate Acupuncture in Ireland. Furthermore, he has practiced and taught Asian martial and movement arts for 25 years.  In addition to training professionals, ICAM believes that educated patients are better able to contribute to their own care and are more successful patients.  Thank you for visiting ICAM and we look forward to having you as a student.

Accreditation

ICAM is not accredited by any educational accrediting agency.  The primary purpose of ICAM is to provide high quality continuing education for practitioners of Oriental medicine and as such most of our courses are or will be approved by the NCCAOM for CEU/PDA hours.  Other courses are offered as general education for other health care providers and the general public.

People who seek training to become a professional acupuncturist or practitioner of Oriental medicine need to graduate from a 3 to 4 year full time accredited program.  Currently the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM ) is the only accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to evaluate entry-level training in acupuncture and Oriental medicine (AOM).  Generally students need 2 years of college level training before entering a professional training program although the older and more prestigious schools of AOM will require completion of a bachelor’s degree before entry into their programs (and some states will require completion of both and AOM degree and a regionally accredited bachelor’s degree for licensure).  For a list of ACAOM accredited schools please go to www.acaom.org .  ICAM believes that abbreviated training programs in AOM for physicians or other health care professionals represent a serious threat to the integrity of acupuncture and Oriental medicine and are a public health risk.  As such, we will not accept any health care provider in our professional level courses who have not attended a nationally or regionally accredited (recognized by the US Department of Education) program of education that meets or exceeds current ACAOM standards.
