Complex Case Review

Most practitioners of acupuncture and Oriental medicine (AOM) in the United States work independently in private offices.  However, in private practice settings it is difficult or impossible to obtain consultations on difficult or complex cases.  In hospitals medical doctors always have other practitioners who provide consultations.  The Institute for Classical Asian Medicine is trying to remedy this situation by providing professional consultation services to acupuncturists and Oriental medicine practitioners.

For help with complex cases please contact our office for information on consultation fees.  Our director, Henry McCann, or other experienced practitioners will provide expert feedback and suggestions on acupuncture or Chinese herbal treatment, or on Qigong and other aspects of Oriental medicine.  (Please note that we will only provide distance Chinese herbal consultations for other practitioners who have professional level training in Chinese herbal medicine.)


Chinese Herbal Medicine Referrals

In many areas of the United States acupuncturists can be licensed without professional level training in herbal medicine, an essential part of the practice of Oriental medicine.  In Asia acupuncture clinics will frequently refer patients to expert herbal medicine practitioners for herbal consultations to complement acupuncture treatment.  Today in the US acupuncturists who provide herbal medicines to patients when they do not have proper full training open themselves up to significant liability and put their patients at possible risk.  Our office regularly provides herbal consultations for local acupuncture practitioners so that their patients can benefit from Chinese herbal medicine while still maintaining their relationship with their original acupuncturist.

Please contact us for more information about herbal medicine referral services.  Your patient will make an appointment with our clinic for an herbal medicine consultation while still maintaining their acupuncture treatment with you (as a policy we will not provide acupuncture to patients referred to us from other acupuncturists for herbal consultations).  Please note that this service is available only to local practitioners who can have patients come in person to our clinic – no distant consultations are available.
