Pain is one of the most common conditions seen in the typical American clinic of East Asian medicine. The general public is aware of the many benefits of acupuncture in the treatment of pain, but Chinese herbal medicine is equally as effective with a long history of use. This class will provide a detailed examination of pain in Chinese medicine and pain management with traditional herbal formulas. It will include discussions of pain and injury staging theory and practice, commonly used single herbs, formulas and strategies, and introduce herbal formulas from classical lineages of Chinese martial arts. We will also discuss the external application of herbs.
Goals:
Develop an understand of Chinese medicine's description of pain
Learn different methods of pain and injury differentiation, including by stage, disease location, and other pattern differentials
Know and understand commonly used formulas and their modifications for pain and injury management, both internally and externally
This class is intended for people with a basic understanding of single herbs and formula construction.
